Sometimes residents don t realize what a huge impact turning on their exterior lights will have &. it helps! The Village Green Neighborhood Watch put together these tips to make it easier for you to illuminate your home after dark. As always, please talk with your Neighborhood Watch Court Captain and neighbors (who always have great ideas) or attend any Safety Committee meeting (current meeting times are listed on our website). We d be glad to help!

All units at the Green have a numbered faceplate with a light above their doorway. Some units (ie: downstairs, townhomes, or cottages) also have globe lights for their patios. If you are home most of the time and remember to turn on your lights in the evening, great job! Just keep doing what you re doing!

For those of you who work or travel and are not home by the time the sun goes down, it is extremely important that you automate your lights. Leaving your lights off until you get home, or leaving them on all day, can announce to a potential thief that you are absent and possibly make you an easier target for home burglary.

There are two types of lighting products that can help you. The first is a 5-minute solution that will cost around $15. It can automate all numbered faceplate lights above the door. The second is a home automation system that can automate your interior and exterior lighting.

1. Dusk/Dawn Adaptor
Below is a picture of a screw in adaptor that will automatically turn a light on at dusk and off at dawn. The adaptor listed below will work for any exterior light at Village Green that has an address faceplate in front of it. Also listed below is an incandescent bulb that works with the adaptor. Both products are available at Home Depot and online.

1) Westek "Outdoor/Indoor Light Control." adaptor necessary for the bulb below..either the white or gray model will work.

2) Philips Indoor Spot.40W-R14 mini reflector

1) 2)

2. Home Automation (interior and exterior)
If you are frequently away, you might consider automating the lights for both inside and outside your house. Intermatic has developed a user-friendly home control system called Home Settings. It is simple to install, easy to use, and very cost effective.

• The system works with a base unit that can be programmed to control up to 28 "scenes" in your house
• It can automate plug-in and in-wall devices
• The base unit can reach components at a distance of 0-50 feet, or even greater, depending on wall or floor thickness
• Do-It-Yourself installation can be complete in 3 hours or less
• The system runs on simple AA batteries
• The cost for most device components is $50 or less

The Home Settings units can be purchased at most Fry's and Lowe 's stores (call before you go), and from 3rd party online retailers. Intermatic has a whole line of easy to use home lighting products, from simple 'plug in timers' to full automation. For more information, call 815-675-7000, or visit Intermatic online at http://www.intermatic.com/ and select "Home Settings."

Many Village Green Residents are going Green!
